Reading long policy documents for any financial investment can be agony, but it doesn’t mean you don’t need to do it. Instead of getting someone else to read them for you, we have compiled a list of movies which can help. This way you can watch and enjoy your insurance learnings, before getting to the fine print. So, here is a list of the best insurance and financial advice from the movies:
1. The Incredibles (2004)
We all remember this Pixar gem; of course, we do! How can anyone forget—Mr Incredible? Elastigirl? Violet?! DASH!
Plot: Superhero, ‘Mr Incredible’ (Bob), transforms into an insurance agent after public outrage forces crime fighters into retirement. However, the crime never stops and the family of undercover superheroes have to group together to save the world, once again.
Lesson: Family is not only the most important thing, it is everything; you need to secure their future, even if you’re not in it. Elastigirl (Helen) truly explains the essence of insurance, promoting the value of security. She says, while comforting Bob—‘…Go save the world, one policy at a time’.
There’s an endearing scene where Bob tries to explain to old ladies the beneficial loopholes in their insurance policies; encouraging the audience to always read the fine print of one’s insurance. Always be on your guard, just like The Incredibles!
2. OMG – Oh My God! (2012)
A 2012-release, the movie created quite a few waves and discussions with its storyline, which was never heard of before. While it got its fair share of controversies, the movie was a success as a whole.
Plot: Kanji Lal Mehta, an atheist shopkeeper sees that only his shop is destroyed when a low-intensity earthquake hits his market area. Incensed, when his insurer rejects his claim on the basis of disaster exclusion as an ‘Act of God’, he decides to file a lawsuit against god.
Lesson: While the movie shrewdly depicts the fraudulence of godmen and god women, it pinpoints one vital thing—always be aware of the exclusions in your policy. You do not want to end up like Kanji, do you?
3. Double Indemnity (1944)
Ranked 29th on the American Film Institute’s ‘100 Greatest American Movies’, it is an absolutely thrilling tale!
Plot: Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray), an insurance agent from Los Angles falls to the charms of Phyllis (Barbara Stanwyck). They hatch a plan where once Phyllis’ husband signs the life insurance, the duo kills him and orchestrate it to look like an accident. The act is to help Phyliss gain twice the amount of her husband’s insurance money, under the double indemnity clause. Their game plan faces a serious hindrance when the company’s claims adjuster suspects their foul play.
Lesson: reading the fine print of your policy can help you get more than you think. (Only when the claim is justified, of course!)
4. Ajnabee (2004)
Filled with thrill, suspense, and loads of wit, it is everything one can expect from an Abbas-Mustan offering.
Plot: Raj (Bobby Deol) and Priya (Kareena Kapoor), a newly married couple move to Switzerland, where they befriend Vikram (Akshay Kumar) and Sonia (Bipasha Basu). Everything seems all right, until the day Raj wakes up in Vikram’s house and finds Sonia dead. Did Raj murder his friend’s wife or was it Vikram’s devious plot all along, just to get his hands on his wife’s insurance money?
Lesson: There are two important takeaways from this movie, when it comes to the subject of insurance—always be very vigilant when you pick a nominee in your policy (poor Sonia!), and ensure that you choose smart passwords, which are not easy to predict.
5. The Big White (2005)
Dead bodies, mafia, fraud, and romance—what else can one ask from a drama?
Plot: Travel agent Paul Barnell (Robin Williams) comes across a frozen corpse, which is dumped after a mafia hit. Sensing an escape from his financial problems, he mutilates the corpse and stages it as an animal attack in order to encash his lost brother’s insurance settlement. Seems simple? Well, there are several hurdles blocking Barnell’s way—the suspicious insurance agent, the mafia who also have their eye on the money, and the re-emergence of Barnell’s long lost brother Raymond, just in time.
Lesson: Never ever commit a fraud, especially not insurance related! You might get the money but the law will eventually catch hold of you.
