It’s not modern-day classism, but being schooled in elite institutions as a reflection of your ‘fine pedigree’
is an old-school tradition. Setting fine distinctions and many finer lines among SSC, CBSC, ISCE, and IB schools, parents are getting increasingly fraught with finding out the best school to educate their child. Regardless of the schools though, one thing is a cert: IB board is the new ICSE.
Founded in the year 1968 by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO), based in Geneva, IB stands for International Baccalaureate, and broadly runs three kinds of educational programmes: a) Primary Years Programme for kindergarten to class 5; b) The Middle Years Programme beginning from class 5 to class 10; and c) the Diploma Programme that comprises your final two years. It is mainly an application-based education program for parents who desire an ‘all-round’ development for their child.
It works on the sole principal that children should not be eligible to appear for examinations until they’re in class 10. Some even have a provision wherein children do not have to make use of text books and instead, choose/select their own books. The top IB schools of the country are as follows:
The Doon School, Dehra Dun
Situated in Dehra Dun, Uttarakhand, Doon School was founded by Satish Ranjan Das, a lawyer from Kolkata. Doon School is a ‘boys-only’ boarding school whose first headmaster was an Englishman. Arthur E. Foot, a science teacher at Eton College was the headmaster until the country’s independence, after which he had to leave for England. Doon School offers Indian Certificate of Secondary Examination (ICSE) and one can select from the medium of education from two boards: International Baccalaureate (IB) or Indian School Certificate (ISC) for the final two years. IB has been introduced recently, i.e., in the year 2006, before which the school conducted the ISC examinations only.
The Doon School has had a string of high-profile residents (also known as ‘Doscos’), such as our former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, writers Amitav Ghosh and Vikram Seth, actors such as sons of Naseruddin Shah, i.e., Imaad Shah and Vivaan Shah, Olympic winner Abhinav Bindra. Doon School has also been ranked as the best residential school that India has ever produced by the likes of Outlook, BBC, and the Times of India.
Located at the ‘Queen of hills’, Mussoorie (Uttarakhand), Woodstock School is an international residential school which, unlike Doon School, broadly believes in co-education. It is one of the most well-known boarding schools of South Asia due to the fact that it provides a number of options for students who graduate from there. A student who passes out from Woodstock is awarded a diploma that is equivalent to a high school diploma of the United States (since it is accredited by the Middle States Association). This school also offers IGCSE exams, SAT and advanced placement test. The most brilliant aspect of this school is the fact that it produces a culture wherein students from all over the world come together and are introduced to new cultures.
According to Outlook, India, Woodstock stands tall as one of best international schools of the country.
