Chennai, October 19: AEGON Religare Life Insurance has partnered with Isha Foundation to help Chennai turn over a ‘green’ leaf. As a part of the campaign, AEGON Religare Life Insurance will support the tree planting initiative which is part of Isha Foundation’s Project Green Hands. The objective of this initiative is to sensitise the population of Chennai to issues of the environment and get them motivated to act in a pro-active manner and increase the green cover of Chennai over a period of a few years.
14 teams comprising of 3-4 employees each of AEGON Religare Life Insurance will plant over 1,000 saplings across Chennai. Through an extensive door to door exercise, each of the teams has identified people who would be guardians to the sapling. This would entail watering it everyday till it is mature and self sustaining. These guardians have planted the saplings in or around their houses, offices, schools and colleges. 200 saplings have already been planted this month.
“Everyday news reports about Global warming and it’s attendant threats highlight the fragility of our environment. It is the responsibility of every individual to do their bit to protect our environment immediately. At AEGON Religare Life Insurance, we realise our commitment towards the environment we live in which is why we are overjoyed to be part of this initiative called Project Green Hands in Chennai. We hope that our actions will make a difference and contribute in a positive manner in enhancing the green cover in Chennai,” said Mr Yateesh Srivastava, Chief Marketing Officer, AEGON Religare Life Insurance.
Project Green Hands, an ecological initiative of Isha Foundation, aims to plant 11.4 crore trees all over Tamil Nadu in the next 10 years. This has the potential to create a net 30% tree cover, which is the desirable level. This forms the first step to save this piece of the planet and inspire others to follow suit. The project has already resulted in the planting of over 82 lakh trees all over Tamil Nadu during the last five years, including a Guinness World Record planting of 852,587 trees on a single day, with over 250,000 volunteers participating on the 17th of October 2006. On 5th June, 2010, Isha was awarded the Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar, the highest National award for environment related work.
