15 minutes of physical activity every 2 hours is essential to a child’s good health

All Work and No Play, Makes Jack a Dull Boy – since middle-school we have been constantly learning this and yet the truth value of it never ceases. When we say exercise, it doesn’t always have to mean going to the gym, doing push-ups and running on a treadmill. For a child in school it could be as simple as playing outside or being physically active. The importance of this short break in a child’s daily life is more important than it seems. A growing child must exercise daily to avoid serious diseases and to stay away from obesity. Smartphones and iPads have cut down physical activity in children by a considerable amount.

How bad is it?

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, about one-third of gadget-spoiled American children ages 10 to 17 are overweight or obese. This shows that growing children do not get involved in physical activities as much as it is required for a healthy body to function. The cause for this is a melange of technology, urbanized living, academic pressures and other factors which have led to historically low rates of physical activity in youth. We take our good health for granted and realise the value of it only when it is too late.

How does 15 minutes help?

A new study suggests that taking a 15-minute physical activity break every 2 hours will boost health and fitness levels. This study examined the effectiveness of the popular Daily Mile initiative – which involves children taking a 15-minute break from class to do physical activities like running and playing ball. It resulted in finding that the Daily Mile Intervention helped in fighting problems such as low physical activity, high sedentary behaviour, declining fitness levels and high levels of obesity.  “Our research observed positive changes in children who participated in The Daily Mile intervention, compared to our control school where the scheme was not introduced,” said one of the study authors Colin Moran from Stirling University, Britain.

What makes it necessary?

Physical (body) and cognitive (brain) development go hand-in-hand. While this continues for life, this relationship is most critical at a young age. When kids are active, their brain develops, allowing for new types of activity. Hence, as a parent you should always encourage your child to go out and play while regulating their access to various electronic gadgets. Parents are always worried about their child’s health, especially mothers who are constantly fussing over the child’s eating habits and unhealthy routine. When you’re doing so much for your child’s better future you might be forgetting one of the most important things that could make your child’s future better- a child insurance plan.

With the current state of our education system and lifestyle of children, they barely get time to focus on their health. Every child is running a race of marks in which they are pressurised to stand first. In such a scenario, it becomes even more important to take a child plan which looks after you child’s health and career dreams all together. Aegon Life provides you with a range of savings and one of the best child plans on the market to look after every need of your child and see to it that nothing comes in between their dreams.

Parents should remember that children always learn from the things that you do. They look up to you and keep observing you. Hence, it is important for you too to have a healthy lifestyle. Only then the kids will let good habits like exercise enter their life. They will get more involved in the activities only if they find it fun and attractive. Behind every healthy and successful child is a parent who made endless efforts. To know about Aegon Life’s life insurance products like term insurance and other products, visit our home page.
