7 Crazy Things that People Have Insured - Aegon Life Blog

When one thinks about insurance, you think about safety and financial security. You think about an institution which will safeguard your family and their finances when you are not around. You think about an aid that will help you restore your dearest car or bike back to its pristine condition. When you think about insurance, you think about medical security. In order to satisfy all the above you get a car, bike or life insurance which will give you peace of mind.

If you let your mind wander, guess how much an arm is worth? This is an impossible thing to guess right. Well, some might think otherwise. The insurance of body parts against damage is a real thing pertaining to a real economic value.

Here are seven of the craziest things people have insured:

  1. Melodious Voice – Bruce Springsteen insured his voice with the Lloyds’s of London. The amount his voice is insured for is $7 Million Dollars. There are articles that date back to 1988. However, the insurer refuses to comment about the time period of the insurance. If you think your voice is as melodious, you too can insure your voice!
  2. Alien Abduction – It is possible to purchase insurance against alien abduction. Around the world, there have been over $10 Million dollars in alien abduction insurance that have been written. If you are scared that one day you might be walking around only to be abducted by aliens, insure yourself today!
  3. Actors and their Body Parts – Prominent Hollywood and Bollywood celebrities have insured their most treasured body parts. Most actors and actresses are widely known for specific striking body parts like their eyes, lips or even their buttocks. Thus, they feel the need to insure them from damage.
  4. Athletes – Most world-renowned athletes have their money-making body part insured. Sania Mirza has insured her hands, Virender Singh insured his fingers, Lionel Messi has insured his legs. Since these body parts are vital for them to be able to play their sport, which is their bread and butter, it is important to insure them from damage or injury.
  5. Lottery winner’s insurance – In the UK, employers can purchase the lottery winner’s insurance against having 2 or more of their employees leave on the account that they have won a lottery. This would prevent the loss of valuable employees in the same time period. Winning a lottery is not compensable either, thus, a company finds the need to get this insurance sometimes. One such loss affected the Chubb Insurance company when more than 6 of their employees won over $216 Million payout!
  6. Tongues – If you are a famous food critic like Egon Rayon, you can insure your tongue for several hundred dollars. Again, being able to make maximum use of your taste-buds is a vital job description for critics. This would also apply for chefs who need their tongues to be able to make sure their food is scintillating for others’ taste buds.
  7. Zombie Apocalypse – Just in case there is one such apocalypse, you can be protected. This policy paper also covers cleaning costs. One would think that cleaning up afterwards would be the least of your worries. There is a company called SunAnt Interactives that see insurance against the Apocalypse, with testimonials of people who have purchased the same.

Although one might think that these are some absurd things that one might get insured, this is their living. One would do everything they possibly can to be able to continue to provide for themselves and their family. Being a subject of alien abduction (although a subjective opinion) would put your life and your family’s life at risk. Hence, although crazy, they may not be completely unreasonable.
