Know It All: Aadhaar-PAN Linking Deadline Extended to June 30, 2018

Like most others, you received an email from your insurance company asking you to link your PAN (Permanent Account Number) to your Aadhaar card. This mandatory exercise for everyone, irrespective of you being a taxpayer or not, is been done to increase transparency and eliminate money laundering instances. Since the central government has made it a rule with a statutory force, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has issued all insurers to enforce the linking without further delay.

The deadline to link these two documents is now June 30, 2018.

Let us look at how to link your Aadhaar to your PAN:

For registered income tax filers

If you file income tax returns, chances are your Aadhaar is linked to your PAN. You can visit www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in to confirm if your Aadhaar is linked to your PAN. Once you log in to the website, a pop-up window will prompt you to link your Aadhaar card with your PAN. In case, this pop-up does not appear, you go to the tab named ‘Profile Settings’ and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’. You will see details like your name, gender and date of birth already mentioned. Verify those with the details given on your Aadhaar card. If they match, enter your Aadhaar card number and the captcha code.

Read everything once again and then click on ‘Link Now’.

For non- registered users

Whether you pay income tax or not, linking your Aadhaar and PAN is mandatory. If you are not registered on the income tax e-filing website, you can use this link https://portal.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/e-Filing/Services/LinkAadhaarHome.html?lang=eng to submit a request for your PAN-Aadhaar linking. The form will ask for details like your PAN number, Aadhaar number, your name on Aadhaar card, etc.

Other methods

  • SMS

The CBDT in its notification dated June 29, 2017, has provided other methods to link PAN and Aadhaar. Now, you can link your PAN and Aadhar by simply sending an SMS either 567678 or 56161. The SMS should have the following format:

UIDPAN<SPACE><12 digit Aadhaar><Space><10 digit PAN>

Example: UIDPAN 123456789123 AKPLM2124M

  • Annexure-I

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has eased the problems of taxpayers who have mismatched data in their PAN and Aadhaar Card. They can resolve this issue and link these two manually. You can visit a service centre to one of the PAN service providers. They will give you a form called Annexure-I. You will need to fill it and provide supporting documents like a copy of your PAN and Aadhaar cards.

With an aim to clamp down on frauds related to PAN cards, the government wants it to be linked to the Aadhaar card. Linking your Aadhaar with other documents like your insurance policies can help record everything in just one place. This is always better than to search around every time you need to revisit a record.
