Families: Different But Same

They say that the family is the smallest unit of democracy and we think this is a great way to describe a group of individuals, related by birth or adoption or circumstances. No two families are same as they are composed of members who are truly unique.

You cannot live without them, sometimes you cannot live with them. Cliched as it may be, it definitely drives home the point that families are a very important support system in our lives and instrumental in shaping the personality of an individual.

To appreciate families around the world and the indispensable value they add to our societies, the United Nations declared 15th May as the International Day of Families. We looked through pop culture to take a  look at diverse families, and we think you might know these 5 special ones:

  1. The Addams Family

The Addams Family isn’t the ideal representation of a perfect family, with their coffin beds and nightmarish house. But despite their doom and gloom persona, they have a positive attitude towards life. The parents; Morticia and Gomez, are always affectionate towards each other and excel as parents, too! They teach their children to be well-mannered, bright and considerate of others, and even lend an ear to their problems. Even though the enthusiasm might differ, we could all learn a thing or two from them about familial love.

  1. Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker (Modern Family)

Breaking away from the conventional image of a family, Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker are one of TV’s most eccentric couples along with their sassy daughter, Lily. They complete each other with their differing qualities Mitchell’s logical thinking needs Cameron’s help to liven up. Definite #DadGoals, they work to give Lily all the happiness and nurture her to share their moral code. Having grown up in rigid households, they ensure she feels accepted and loved at every step of the way. Finding someone who completes you is one of life’s important goals and these two along with their daughter, show us just how rewarding this feeling of security and support can be.

  1. The Simpsons

The Simpsons family is the perfect example of a non-patriarchal family, teaching us about household values in its own special way. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, Homer Simpson plays the figurative head of the family, while his wife, Marge Simpson takes the lead in family matters. Although far away from the picture perfect father figure, the two children ultimately love and adore Homer for his eccentric  methods. His love for his infant daughter is incredible, shown in the series when he takes up an insufferable job to provide her the best lifestyle.

  1. F.R.I.E.N.D.S

During the 1990s, generation X developed a new idea of a ‘chosen family’. Friends were the new family and in this new era, the show ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S’ became a cultural phenomenon; revolving around 6 adults who took on life and all the hardships that came with it. Apart from Ross and Monica, none of the characters were related by blood, but only by the mere fact of being roommates. They always looked out for each other in the cases of finance or even relationship troubles. What the show did was reinforce the depth and relevance friendships can have on an individual’s life. Friends truly are the family you choose.

  1. PowerPuff Girls

An unconventional yet adorable family is the one created by Professor Utonium by a laboratory experiment gone wrong! Three superhero girls, Blossom, Buttercup and Bubbles are born out of this explosion and adopted by the scientist. Even though they have superpowers, the Professor insists they receive an education and is strict about their bedtime. The girls reflect their dad’s teachings by paying the kindness forward amongst their classmates and use their powers to help around the house as well as protect the city from any evil that falls upon it. Possessing super powers and not misusing them, displays how impactful families are in the lives of all children.

Even though all these families are not orthodox and classic ‘white-picket’ stereotypes, the love that they have for each other is unquestionably heartfelt and genuine. So there’s no real perfect family, but each family is perfect in its own way, functioning with each others’ likes and dislikes yet standing together on fundamental decisions. Celebrate your loved ones every day, acknowledge the difference they infuse in you lives and the warmth they spread with their undying support. Ensure their well-being and cement a tension free future for them with timely financial planning, investments, focused savings or buying life insurance plans or term insurance plans that will help them through life’s ups and downs.
