Retirement Planning

Most sportsmen have a limited time to excel in their sport of choice. The window of opportunity of physical fitness, ability and opportunity is very limited. But there are many who chose retirement really young. While sport is mostly a “young man’s game,” some sportsmen plan their retirement at a personal highpoint. Others are forced into retirement due to injury, personal circumstances – like scandal and drug addiction, or just ill health.

Here follows a list of five sportsmen who took to retirement far too early. But in all five of these cases, there was no scandal involved. The five sportsmen who retired early from professional “play” are: Zinedine Zidane, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Bjorn Borg and Rocky Marciano. The footballer, the basketball legends, the tennis star and the boxing superhero all have retirements that left all their fanswanting for more! Which in many cases is a good thing.

It’s FIFA season so if we are to talk about sportsmen who took retirement far too early then the first person to talk about is Zinedine Zidane. The French-Algerian football superhero retired at a high point in his career. His retirement at 34 in 2006 was a shock to all his fans. Of course it was not the end of his association with the sport not the end of his phenomenal success in the field of football. He returned as a coach for the football league and led them to a hat-trick of victories before again retiring as a coach as well. The main takeaway from Zidane’s career and early retirement in both cases is his power to choose. By forward retirement planning, Zidane stayed in control of his career as well as his retirements! He chose retirement both times after major victories, leaving his fans wanting for more instead of being disillusioned.

Next is the case of “Magic” Johnson. This super pro-basketballer disrupted the point-forward position and became an NBA legend had to choose retirement at 32 following ill health and an AIDS diagnoses.  Now ill-health and an expensive disease can strike at anytime, so financial cushions are essential. A retirement plan, early or late needs to cover for ill-health and medical bills. By planning your retirement early and investing through a longer income-secured period one can have a cushier retirement. As the graphs from Retired Athlete Problems blog shows, you can secure your retirement by investing for it earlier. Life insurance is an important way in which sportsmen and the common man can secure themselves and their family for retirement. Fundamentally good life insurance cover is essential to a sound retirement plan.

Reaching a concrete target, say $1 million can be achieved faster when one has been saving from a younger age. The compound interest factor as well as the bonus components of life insurance saving instruments accelerate wealth creation.

The other sports star whose retirement from the playing field stunned the world was Swede tennis star Bjorn Borg. His retirement was in his twenties! He was just 26 but had already won 11 grand slams. Although he attempted a comeback from retirement in the 1990s, it wasn’t successful. Now in order to make retirement secure and stress-free, like how most Indians pefer it, a good retirement strategy is essential. Making a comeback and restarting an old career is not always easy.

The retirement Michael Jordan from basketball also sent shockwaves among basketball aficionados. The Chicago Bulls star and the movie star of Space Jam flew across the court and into the heart of basketball fans. His retirement and move to Washington Wizards was also a move that left his fans wanting for more.

Finally, it was perhaps the undefeated boxer Rocky Marciano whose retirement from the dangerous and injury-prone sport caused many boxing fans a lot of pain.  Seeing him in the ring was pure entertainment and a thing of beauty for his fans so Rocky’s retirement to ensure that he retired undefeated was a body blow to his fans.

So why do sportsmen retire young. In many cases, it’s because they want to leave when they are in their prime. They earn phenomenal amounts of money and if they have a good retirement plan they can be in control of their retirement.  More commonly though ill-health and injury forces retirement on sportsmen, like in the case of Magic Johnson. The key though is to be well-prepared for retirement and save for it, whenever that retirement may happen! Aegon Life’s Insta Pension Plan promises you a consistent income post your retirement, so you can live your dreams thereafter.
