What is maternal health?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Maternal health refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.”  Often ill-health, lack of proper nutrition to the mother, unhygienic living conditions lead to complications at birth, and permanent health issues in the baby.

Child health and nutrition is a topic of research. Supervised child health (with regular consultation with a paediatrician) lays the foundation of mental and physical well-being of the child.

Listed below are essential terms in an alphabetical order for maternal child health that one should have knowledge about:

  1. AAA: Accredited Social Health Activists, Anganwadi worker, and Auxiliary Nurse Midwife are accountable for chasing the health and nutrition objective in India.
  2. Breastfeeding: As you must be aware, breastmilk is highly nutritious and contains all the essential nutrients such as vitamins and minerals that are required by the baby for its healthy growth.
  3. Eligible Couples: This refers to married couples between the ages of 15 and 49 years and consists of 15-18% of the population in a village. An eligible couple (male and female) should be legally married.
  4. Facilities: Medical facilities in India are in the form of sub-centres, primary health centres (PHC), district hospitals, community health centres, hospitals and clinics.
  5. Gestational Age: This helps to know how far along the woman is into pregnancy. Typically, a normal pregnancy lasts between 38 to 42 weeks.
  6. Haemoglobin: This is essential to carry oxygen from the respiratory organs to all the parts of the body.
  7. Janani Suraksha Yojana: This healthcare scheme was initiated in 2005 to encourage child- birth in hospitals. 2015-16 has witnessed institutional births at 78.9% from 38.7% in 2005-06.

  10. Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR): Number of children (of 1,000 live births) who face death in the first 28 days. The NMR of India was reported at 15 in 2013. The UNICEF published the first report on NMR on 20th February 2018 and ranked India, 12th among the lower middle-income nations.
  11. PHC: This is a facility closest to the doctor in a village and serves over 20,000-30,000 people.
  12. RMNCH+A: Government implements RMNCH+A which simply means reproductive, maternal, new-born, child and adolescent health to guarantee health care through all the life stages.
  13. Under-5 mortality: This indicates instances of the child dying before the age of five. As per National Family Health Survey IV: 2015-16, the current figure is 50 out of 1000 for India.
  14. Village Health and Nutrition Day: Immunization, counselling and other related medical services is the objective of village health and nutrition day. This event is organized at the village Anganwadi by the AAA. Anganwadi means a preschool.
  15. Wasting: When the weight of the child is not proportionate to the height, it is known as wasting.

The WHO reports that close to 140 million women undergo childbirth every year. Childbirth is an emotional moment for the expectant mother. It has presented a 56 evidence-based recommendations guideline specifying the required care (clinical and non-clinical) to be given to the mother and the baby. Therefore, arrangement of her comfort and safety is the hospital’s responsibility. Also, another step for insuring the mother-child health is with a cancer insurance plan.
